My review: Pelli Choopulu

While watching "Pelli  Choopulu" I was just wondering why such breezy, well made romantic comedies are not getting made in Tamil. Not that they are getting made regularly in Telugu either, but they come up with one or two such gems every year. I can't remember such a feel good romcom in Tamil over the past few years. Tharun Bhascker Dhasssyam's "Pelli Choopulu" is a very entertaining movie that keeps you engrossed mainly with its breezy screenplay with good casual performance from the cast.  

Though the movie follows the template of the romantic comedies to the tee, the premise is fresh. Wrong address, diametrically opposite personalities, witty friends, coming of age trope, family bonding, everything is there but presented in a thoroughly entertaining manner. It is refreshing to see that the movie is bereft of moral preaching, be it the heroine boozing or the hero settling for a marriage mainly to get dowry for his business. Movie's plot revolves around two contrasting people who meet by accident, get together to do business finally getting hooked to one another.

Vijay Deverakonda as the lazy, wastrel Prasanth is casual in his acting. His scenes with his friends are a riot. Watch out for the scene in which he along with his friends try to capture a prank video. He has good comical sense. Ritu Varma takes time to grow on you, but unlike the plastic doll north Indian actresses, she seems to be talented and carries the movie on her shoulder with ample support from Vijay. Among the support cast Priyadarshi Pullikonda as Kaushik is a show stealer with his terrific comedy timing. The audience are in splits whenever he is on screen. 

Music of the movie enhances the feel good factor with mellifluous, soft  and soothing songs and background score. Vivek Sagar is the music director. Movie is technically sleek. Tharun seems to have a flair for comedy. All the comical scenes in the movie have come out wonderfully and are a important reason why the movie clicks with the audience. He is not bad with the romantic or the emotional aspects of the movie too. He is an important addition to the Telugu film industry. "Pelli Choopulu" would do for him what "Bommarillu" did for Baskar. 

On the whole, "Pelli Choopulu" is a clean and thoroughly enjoyable feel good romcom in Telugu after a long time.

Bottomline: a realistic cheerful entertainer

Manam

My review: Manam

Vikram Kumar known for his intelligent scripting though he has ventured into various genres already in his brief career is at it again with his latest release, "Manam". A heart-warming story that cut across three generations, Vikram has not taken it easy so as to make a feel-good family entertainer but has a backing of a story that is quiet unusual to the Indian cinema. Though we have seen numerous movies that touch upon reincarnation, the interplay of two main plots and few other subplots made with conviction without confusing the viewers is what makes this endeavor an above-par one. 

A story-line that has an inherent danger of seemingly confusing at the outset has got simplified by the intelligent scriptwriter in Vikram Kumar. It is almost impossible for anyone to make this story as simple as they have made it to be. Also the beautiful interplay between the humor and the sentiment make it readily enjoyable for the families. Each of the subplots have their own time period, completion and conviction.    

As the makers proclaim, it is indeed a worthy tribute to the veteran of Telugu cinema, Akkineni Nageswara Rao. Nagarjuna and Naga Chaitanya perform credibly well. The duo perform exceedingly well in their period avatars better than the contemporary ones. Same goes for the lead ladies, Samantha and Shriya. Especially Samantha in the contemporary role acts retarded in most of the scenes. 

Anoop Rubens melodious numbers are in keeping with the overall mood of the movie while P.S.Vinod's cinematography has a lot of rich visuals, a treat for your eyes.

Overall, "Manam" is an intelligently made feel good movie, that touches both your heart and brain. 

Bottomline: Quiet a few laughs, smiles and tears.

Uyyala Jampala

My review: Uyyala Jampala

Almost a decade ago came a movie with all newcomers made by lesser known technicians except for its director with almost nil publicity but ended being one of the biggest hits in Telugu cinema. "Jayam" is the movie and it was remade in most of the other languages too. Though it was a routine rural love story, the simplicity of the story and making as well as the freshness of the cast attracted the audience. On similar lines comes the latest Telugu movie "Uyyala Jampala". 

"Uyyala Jampala" has nothing new as far as story-line is concerned. It is the age old love story between cross cousins who share a love-hate relationship before finally realizing the true love they share just about in time before the female protagonist gets married to NRI groom. Though the story may sound cliched the screenplay makes it an enjoyable fare. Told in a simple lucid manner, movie sails through effortlessly without making any tall claims or having over-the-top cinematic moments. Dialogues are so casual in the rural lingo and the cast which is made of mostly fresh faces make it an endearing watch. 

Raj Tarun as Soori emotes well. He looks every inch  a rural Andhra youth who is naughty, fiery, sentimental and proud as and when the situation warrants. Avika Gor is pleasant looking and emotes well. Only glitch is her lip-sync which goes awry often. The support cast have also done their parts with ease. One often gets a feeling of being part of the village and eavesdropping on the happenings there. Part of the credit should go to the cast and part to the writer-director of the movie Virinchi Varma. 

Sunny's songs and background score is pleasant to the ears while Vishwa's cinematography is beautifully simple. On the whole, "Uyyala Jampala"  is a simple movie with heart making it a wholesome family entertainer. 

Bottomline: Fresh fare for the whole family.

Venkatadri Express

My review: Venkatadri Express

"Venkatadri Express" is not your routine commercial mass masala movie which get releases every Friday in Telugu. Written and directed by Merlapaka Gandhi, it is a romantic comedy spiced up with a pinch of family sentiment and action on the backdrop of travel from Hyderabad to Tirupathi. Gandhi's script is crystal clear and his narration lucid and engaging. Backed by good performances from the star cast, "Venkatadri Express" is a thoroughly enjoyable humorous ride for the whole family. 

The protagonist is the youngest son a strict retired headmaster who is at the verge of being thrown out of his house if he commits one more mistake. On this background the family leave for Tirupathi for the elder son's marriage. Protagonist somehow misses the train who happen to meet Prarthana (Rakul Preet Singh) who is also on her way to Tirupathi. The events of that night as they travel from Hyderabad to Tirupathi by various means of transport and the people whom they meet during the travel form the gist of this interesting movie that never fails to keep you in it's leash.

Sundeep Kishan is casual in his ways. He is at ease in almost all sequences be it comical, romantic, action or sentimental. Rakul Preet is cute and homely looking at the same time ravishing in the song sequence. Her role is the routine Telugu film heroine who must be bubbly and talkative and at times retarded. The support cast is made of largely lesser known actors who all have done their parts excellently. It is the excellent support cast that elevates the movie to a higher level. All of them have succeeded in evoking laughter at most places. Thagubothu Ramesh and Sapthagiri deserve special mention.

Movie is technically sleek with, Chota K.Naidu wielding the camera. Ramana Gokula's music is passable.

On the whole, "Venkatadri Express" is a fun film, enjoyable neat family entertainer that is pleasantly fresh. 

Bottomline: Delightful ride.

Anthaka Mundu Aa Tarvatha

My review: Anthaka Mundu Aa Tarvatha

Mohan Krishna Indraganti has always made movies with substance. He is one of the few movie-makers in Telugu industry still not enamored by the loud and crass commercial movie making that is plaguing the industry. This time around with his "Anthaka Mundu Aa Tarvatha" (AMAT) he has explored the "commitment phobia" that has become rampant among current youngsters who are in love in a very beautiful manner.

Steering away from the routine glitz and glamour of the Telugu films (movie doesn't even have one "dancing around the trees" or "mindless shaking of hips in foreign locales"routine which is astounding considering this is a romantic comedy) and sticking onto reality in the inception, execution and performance, AMAT is surely going  to make the youngsters and family audience take notice. Though the movie is realistic in its content there is no shortage of entertainment. It goes to show that there are ample scope for the audience to get entertained even with routine and mundane day to day affairs if told and presented in the right manner. And Mohan has surely done it and entertained the audience and at the same time has succeeded in steering home the message he intended to deliver. 

Anil and Ananya meet by chance in a marriage and fall in love instantly. But in both their families their parents' relationship is under strain which sends seeds of doubt into their psyche about the viability of their relationship in the long run. Confronted with commitment phobia they decide to test their compatibility by having a pact of living-in for two months and go through the grind and to decide about their long term commitment thence. What they go through in that two months, the challenges, trials and tribulations and how it influences their eventual decisions is what the movie is all about. 

Mohan has written the story, screenplay and dialogues apart from directing the movie. Screenplay is as lucid as a mountain stream moving at a right pace neither too fast and soulless nor too slow and boring. He has stuck the right speed in which movies of this genre works well with the audience. Dialogues are witty and at the same time damn hilarious. 

Sumanth Ashwin as Anil and Eesha as Ananya have done their parts exceedingly well belying their inexperience. Sumanth is so casual in his portrayal and  so confident on screen. Eesha too is good in emoting various feelings and has a very expressive face which she has put to full use. The chemistry between the lead pair is sparkling. Rao Ramesh and Rohini as Anil's parents are aptly cast and have given good performances while Ravi Babu and Madhubala (of "Gentlemam" and "Roja" fame makes a comeback ) are miscast as Ananya's parents with both overacting at various occasions. 

Kalyani Konduri has given soothing music, be it songs most of which are melodious or the background score. P.G.Vinda has captured the serene beauty of Rajamundhry as well the hustle and bustle of Hyderabad city aesthetically. 

On the whole, AMAT is a must watch for all the lovers of the past, present and future. Go for it and enjoy the evening with your whole family. 

Bottomline: Clean romantic comedy with a message or two for the whole family.

Veyyi Abaddalu

My review: Veyyi Abaddalu

Teja's wait for a hit continues with his latest movie "Veyyi Abaddalu". Touted to be a romantic comedy it is neither romantic nor comical. Teja seems to have lost his focus while writing this movie hence the screenplay meanders aimlessly before crash landing on a predictable and a lame climax. There is absolutely no emotional connect with the lead pair as their roles are written superficially. 

Comedy works in parts but as a whole makers are confused as to whether to make it a full length comedy or to instill usual doses of masala with action, sentiment and romance. In the end it doesn't do justice to anything. Wonder what has happened to this once talented writer-director Teja.

 Who in her right mind would barge into her divorced husband's house that too into his bedroom albiet with a hidden agenda. Neither the romance nor the anger of the heroine over the hero is well established. In the end the remorse that the heroine has is confusing for she has not done any wrong in separating from a lair who has conned her all the way to marriage. Chauvinism galore. 

Sairam Shankar is good as Sathya who lies his way to marriage and suffers as the consequence of it. He is good be it dancing or in the comical situations or with his dialogue delivery. Only in the sentimental scenes he looks lacking in confidence and it shows. Ester Noronha makes her debut as the lead actress. She looks ravishing but lacks emotive skills. Nagababu is a show-stealer in a comical role. If the movie has 5-6 scenes where one can laugh wholeheartedly Nagababu is there in about 4 or 5 of them.

Movie doesn't boasts of catchy songs which is usually the Teja movie's forte. Ramana Gokula is the music director and his music is routine fare. Technically also the movie is average.

On the whole, "Veyyi Abaddalu" is stale potpourri  prepared by a confused team that can be better enjoyed when it is showcased in your satellite channel shortly.

Bottomline:  Lack the punch.

Balupu

My review: Balupu

One thing has always intrigued movie lovers of the south. Telugu film industry is by far the richest industry down south, technically far superior and has the widest release among all the south Indian language movies. Yet sadly content wise they still languish at the bottom harping onto the same mass masala template from the 80's and 90's. Nothing seem to change over the years except the actors, actresses and the technicians.

Tamil film industry has always been known to have equal footing in both commercial mass masala as well as classy story oriented movies. In the past few years after repeated failure of mindless commercial movies, even those staring the A-list actors , it is going through a heartening phase of content getting more importance than anything else. Malayalam movies have always been meaningful and had content. Especially over the last couple of years there is a sea change in the manner in which script and scriptwriters are given more importance than anything else. These are exciting times there in Malayalam cinema industry. Even Kannada film industry is showing promise in the form new young directors trying out new subjects and themes in spite of the regular flow of remakes.

But the Telugu movies are still following the same age old template of a girl in the distress first scene followed by the Hero introduction who saves the girl from the group of gundas mouthing couple of corny punch lines along the way. Cut to the next scene, heroine introduction in a pub who is as always as dumb as you could get accompanied by a even dumber crony. Cut to the next scene a menacing sickle/pistol wielding Villain and then a loving sentimental father are introduced one by one.

Initial tit for tat game between the hero and heroine ends up invariably in Heroine falling in love albiet one-sided even after getting subjected to loads of insults. Then comes the Interval bang with stuntmen flying all over the place when the real identity of the hero is revealed. After the break comes the flashback where there would be another heroine purely for sentimental purpose who would invariable get killed. She would give a long sermon on why the hero should mend his ways and look out for another girl to marry in the ICU, before breathing her last...! After a fast dance number with heroine brandishing her midriff in flashy costumes  and another couple of high octane over the top action sequences , movie ends with the entire cast flashing their Colgate smile on the screen...!!!

Ridiculous is the word. Whether to blame the laziness of the makers or the inanity of the viewers which is resulting in movie of such banal nature getting released in Telugu Friday after Friday. Read somewhere that Shruthi Hassan has told that she is not getting enough challenging role in Tamil as the reason for not acting that much in Tamil. After acting in such a dumb character one wonders what she meant by "challenging". Is it that silly brandishing of your dancing skills for "jampak japang" at the most ridiculous of situation in the movie. Wonder what was the director thinking when he kept that "jampak japang " scene in the climax when the two gangs shake their hip tit for tat..!! sigh..!!!

Ravi Teja does what he is comfortable with but how long he plans to do the same thing time and again. Shruthi Hassan comes in a pedestrian "telugu glam " heroine role. It is a shocker from her considering her lineage. Anjali in another mundane "heart of gold, homily telugu" heroine role. Prakash Raj, Ashutosh Rana and his gang of Villains roam around the screen with menacing eyes and loads of weapons.  

Thaman continues from where he left in his umpteen Telugu movies. Couple of foot-tapping numbers, couple of melodies strictly adhering to the template.

Jayanan Vincent captures all the masala elements that need to be captured studiously.

On the whole, I don't know how the Telugu audience would take it, but for the rest of us it is pain sitting in the movie theater for two and half hours. May be it is my mistake to venture into the theater showing this movie for they make movie for their audience and hence this not nice on my part to barge into their territory and cry about it.

Bottomline: Ridiculously hackneyed.

Seethamma Vakitlo Sirimalle Chettu

My review: Seethamma Vakitlo Sirimalle Chettu

Srikanth Addala's second movie "Seethamma Vakitlo Sirimalle Chettu" after his successful and critically acclaimed "Kotha Bagaru logam" is a story of two brothers, how their different personalities clash and the same gets resolved. Starring Venkatesh and Mahesh Babu in the lead, the movie generated lot of buzz before its release. However the end product just fails to live up to the humongous expectations.It is a strictly okayish movie at best.

Srikanth who has written the story and screenplay seem to have been heavily inspired by numerous such family tear-jerkers of the yore. Movie is outlandish, playing out straight from the 70's and 80's. It is still a puzzle why this movie needed superstars like Venkatesh and Mahesh Babu in it. Especially Venkatesh is sidelined, doesn't have much to do. 

It is clear that Srikanth wanted to make a movie for the Sankaranthi season and his target audience is clear, family and ladies. But we are currently in 2013 and I seriously doubt whether there are people who can muster enough patience and sit through the entirety of such movies which is more like a condensed television serial.  

Mahesh Babu has a more substantial role and he has done his part well. As said earlier Venkatesh doesn't have much scope. It is really bamboozling why in most of the Telugu movies heroine are portrayed with borderline intelligence with bizzare childish mannerisms. This one too Samantha to a great extent and Anjali to a lesser degree try to be too cute to comfort, often repulsive. Veterans like Prakash Raj, Jayasudha, Rohini Hattangadi, Kota Srinivasa Rao, Tenikella Bharani, Rao Ramesh do their parts well.

Mickey J Meyers songs are soothing to the ears. K.V.Guhan has shot the movie pleasantly.

Touted to be the wholesome family entertainer for the festive season, somehow one gets a feeling to artificiality or superficiality while watching the movie. 

Bottomline: For patient viewing..!

Krishnam Vande Jagadgurum

My review: Krishnam Vande Jagadgurum

Krish is one of the most promising young directors of Telugu cinema. His previous movies "Gamyam" and "Vedham" are not only critically acclaimed but also well received at the box-office too. He is a kind of director who addresses contemporary issues without compromising on the entertainment quotient. His latest movie "Krishnam Vande Jagadgurum" (KVJ) fails to live up the standards he has set for himself.

KVJ also address a socially relevant issue of illegal mines and exploitation of the natural resources but sadly it is used just like a pickle. KVJ in actuality is an full blown masala, good old revenge story of the protagonist settling his scores against the killer of his parents, a young man's fight for justice against the mighty antagonist.But the problem is that  Krish has totally got confused as to whether make it as a commercial masala or a classy his style of a movie. In the end he has done justice to neither.

A uninspiring storyline, unengaging screenplay, low entertainment values, poor comedy track and irritating item numbers (not one but two..!) leaves a bitter taste in the end. The action sequences lack a punch and the dialogues are mundane.

Rana has done a decent job. His histrionic skills has improved. Nayanthara is radiant, though she is on screen almost throughout the movie she doesn't have much scope to perform. Milind Gunaji in a beaten to bushes villainous role who ends up getting beaten black and blue though he is the most powerful man in Bellary is a big yawn. Brahmanandam fails to make any impact.

In Manisharma's music there isn't any good music number. Background score is good. Technically the movie is sleek and stylish. V.S.Gnanasekhar should get credit for most of it for his brilliant cinematography. CG work however could have been better.

On the whole, KVJ fails to pass muster.

Bottomline: Much ado about nothing.

Routine Love Story

My review: Routine Love Story

"Routine Love Story" is a romantic comedy from Praveen Sattaru who's debut flick "LBW" was critically acclaimed and well received by the audience. What could have been a really nice take on the current generation's perception of falling in love and making it work is watered down by really ridiculous and childish comical elements. The main plot of the love-hate-love relationship between the lead pair is portrayed realistically and interestingly.

Though it is christened "Routine Love Story" the screenplay is fresh. The initial pact that the lead pair get into about knowing each other before falling in love and when they realize that  they have fallen in love with each other(which is shown not as a moment but a process that happens over a period of time) are shown like how it happens in the lives of  current generation's youngsters.

Movie's biggest plus is the lead pair and their crackling chemistry. Sundeep Kishan and Regina Cassandra have done their parts to perfection. Especially Regina is excellent. She comes across as a natural performer and she looks damn cute too. Sundeep has also done his part well. The trio who play his friends are first-class while the comedy team led by M.N.Narayana are let down by juvenile writing.

Micky J Meyers' music is good though it reminds of many of his previous compositions. Suresh Bharghav's cinematography is adequate and the movie as a whole is technically okay, could have been better.

Praveen Sattaru who came into prominence with his previous movie has tried to live up to the name with his second venture too. He has tried to repeat with the concept which he seems to be comfortable with in his second venture too. He does succeeds to some extent. He could have tightened up his script a bit more and should have done away with those irritatingly poor sequences involving the heroine's family. Then it would have become as memorable as his first one.

On the whole, "Routine love story" merits a one time watch mainly for the lead pair's chemistry which lights up the screen.

Bottomline: Routine rom-com

Avunu

My review : Avunu

Ravi Babu's "Avunu" is decent horror flick. The USP of the movie is that most of the horror sequences happen in bright light & there is no unnecessary gimmickry in the form of unusual camera movements or terrifying background score. Though there are not many hair-raising horror sequences in the movie the director has managed to keep the viewers engaged for almost 2 hours. It is an achievement in itself considering most of the movie happens in a single house.

The problem with these kind of movies are that if you are a non-believer in Ghosts straight away you loose interest. Whatever happens you would witness it with a sense of detachment ,sometimes with amusement. More humourous thing is a "child psychologist" explaining that the open anterior fontanelle is way through which divinity enters one's body as a result of which people with one can see & converse with ghosts...!!! Heights of ridiculousness & blatant attempt at fostering superstitions & saffron ideology.

Movie strictly follow all the Indian horror movie template. There is a voyeuristic "bad " ghost whose only mission is to make love with the heroine and there is a doting "good" grandpa ghost who gives company to a lonely kid of a busy techie couple. And there is a mandatory pious old lady who tries to exorcist the ghost with "Anjaneya" photo & the holy ash but in the end the ghost overpowers her. A spooky looking kid , lonely house , ghost who can enter each & everyone's body , etc.  

Poorna has done a very good work in this movie. She almost carries the entire movie on her shoulder. She is there right from the first frame to last & her expressions are exact. It is a good opportunity for this talented actress & she has utilized the chance well. Harshvardhan Rane as her husband is passable while Sudha is once again typecast. Chalapathi Rao's oneliners are awesome & takes care of the humor in the first half.

Sekhar Chandra has done music & has refrained from undue gimmickry to bring in cheap horror. Another person who has done the same is Sudhakar Reddy , the cinematographer. With routine camera angles only they have managed to spook the viewers. The CG department have also done a stupendous job. There is no zombie faces or bloody trails or spooky skeletons but yet the CG team has done their best to scare.

Ravi Babu's creativity is evident right from his promo posters &  the initial titles. But when it comes to "Avunu" , the movie is predictable right from the first scene till the last frame. Nonetheless "Avunu" is a nice watch if you are ready for subtle horror.

Bottomline: One woman show..!

Life is Beautiful

My review : Life is Beautiful

A hint that Sekhar Kammula was loosing his grip was evident in his previous flick "Leader". His latest one which he has written , produced & directed "Life is Beautiful" is the least interesting of all his movies. Surprisingly the emotional connect that he is so good at is missing here. Whole movie is very dramatic & artificial that one get a feeling of watching an amateurishly made serial. 

Mired with a very casual direction with no attention to detail whatsoever , the movie is replete with oft repeated scenes & themes of Sekhar's previous movies. Only thing is that here everything seems forced into the narrative rather than them taking their normal course. Even the twist  towards the end & the mother sentiment  seem contrived & fails to make any impact. 

The crude manner in which he has showcased the class divide in a black & white manner is not in keeping with Sekhar's stature. There is not even one scene in this movie which he can claim to be novel. He has chosen to play it safe or one should say lazy by not thinking much but stuck in his comfort zone. 

Poor direction galore with every female character parading with overdone make-up , every male character doing nothing else other than either falling in love or engaging in gang fights. Melodrama rules & there is no scope for subtlety which is unusual from Sekhar.   

There are few instances where one could laugh out loud but they are few & far in between in this mediocre fare.   

Among the new comers Kaushik who plays Abhi & Sudhakar Komakula who plays Nagaraj walk away with acting honours. Rest of the newcomers show their inexperience. Abhijeet Duddala as Srini is self-conscious , Shagun Kaur as Paddu is charming but unidimentional in her acting  , Zara Shah as Lakshmi is good looking but doesn't seem to have any idea of what acting is. Among the well known ones Shriya does her usual bit in the name of acting while Anjala Jhaveri surprisingly does a good job. Much hyped come-back of Amala falls flat in a very cardboardish character. 

Mickey J Meyer has come out with his regular Sekhar Kammula movie background score & songs. 

If there is anything that one can talk good about in this movie , it is Vijay C Kumar's excellent cinematography with high production values.

On the whole, "Life is Beautiful " is Sekhar remaking his own movies in an amateurish manner.

Bottomline : Movie isn't beautiful

Julayi

My review : Julayi

Allu Arjun after his not-so-successful "Badrinath" has joint hands with Trivikram Srinivan who himself is recuperating from his dismal last venture "Khaleja". These two have come out with "Julayi" which does nothing much to lessen their misery. Infact it piles up the misery for the viewers with its inane action sequences, logic-less screenplay & routine scenes. Only solace is the comedy track of the movie with Brahmanandam at the helm. 

There is no premise for hatred between the protagonist & antagonist as a result of which whatever that follows looks banal & contrived. It is a unwritten rule that in commercial mass masala movies one can't look for logic but this movie goes too far. Things happen with ridiculous ease for the protagonist who appears to have eye for each & every things , appears in every important places & does all the right things. The characterizations of all the characters are sketchy & hence doesn't create much of an impact overall.

Allu Arjun dances well & agile is action sequences. Acting seem to a far cry for him as does his co-star Ileana. She not only acts pathetically but looks too. She is getting more & more anorexic with each passing movie. Sonu Sood is wasted in a very cardboard like character while Rajendra Prasad uses his experience to come out unscathed in a poorly etched role. Brahmanandam evokes lots of laughs. 

Music by Devi Sri Prasad has one good melody in "Oh madhu". Rest of the songs are aural torture as does the background score.

Technically movie is good except for couple of tacky visual effects. Chota K Naidu & Shyam K Naidu are the cinematographers.

On the whole, "Julayi" has good comedy scenes interspersed with loads of unintended comedy.

Bottomline : Headache
