Godhi Banna Sadharana Mykattu

My review: Godhi Banna Sadharana Mykattu

"Godhi Banna Sadharana Mykattu" (GBSM) is a yet another one of those promising lineup of impressive movies that Kannada cinema is witnessing over the past few months, following "U turn" and "Thithi". And it again reinforces the fact that if Rakshit Shetty associated with a movie then it is bound to be mighty good. It is a scintillating debut for Hemanth Rao, who belies the fact that he is a greenhorn with his masterful command over the medium of cinema. A wonderfully written and terrifically made movie, GBSM leaves you awestruck with the manner in which Hemanth has carved a such a non-linear movie so seamlessly.

It is refreshing to see a kannada movie dealing so sensitively and scientifically with Alzheimer's. And how Hemanth Rao has weaved a story that is full of thrills and suspense with a missing person with Alzheimer's as its fulcrum is just terrific. Movie takes its own sweet little time to get on the track but once it happens what follows is an engrossing tale that has many strands that gets tied together and each knot getting unraveling as the movie progresses. It is yet another wonderful attempt at the hyperlink format of screenplay in Indian cinema.

Since it follows a hyperlink narrative, it have many strands with each character clearly etched and well rounded. The central character of the one with " godhi banna sadharana mykattu, Venkoba Rao played by Anant Nag is one of his memorable roles so far. He is just fantastic as a person suffering from Alzheimer's with blissful unawareness of the dangerous situation he has gotten into. He has lots of memorable scenes in the movie, the one about black dog and white dog is my favorite. Without him it would have been nearly impossible for the movie to have been made. And it would be a very difficult job for any one to reprise this role if and when the movie gets remade in any other language.

Rakshit Shetty as his callous son who rediscovers himself and his father while he goes in frantic search of him is again tremendous. The gamut of emotions he brings out effortlessly on screen needs to be savored on screen. Shruthi Hariharan, as the doctor who takes care of Venkob and who assists in his search is impressive. Achyuth Kumar is fast developing into one of the  best supporting actor in Kannada. Here again he vindicates it. Vasishta Sinha gets a meaty role as a gangster with conscience and Ravikiran as his assistant Manja whose indiscretions lead them into trouble are both good.

Movie is technically sleek with able support from Charan Raj, the music director who has given some lilting melodies, and Nanda Kishore, the cinematographer who has come out with some good frames.

On the whole, GBSM is one of the finest debut works in the recent years.

Bottomline: A magnificent movie.

U Turn

My review: U Turn

Pawan Kumar's "U Turn" after his pathbreaking "Lucia" had a lot riding on it which further got accentuated by the curiosity enhancing promos and teasers. This time he tries to deal with a topical issue of traffic violation and the consequences it would lead to.

Movie is terrific as far its making is concerned as well as its staging. Like he effortlessly did in his previous two movies the narration takes a while to set its pace but gradually it does sucks you into it. After the initial lull you end up getting engrossed to the proceedings. The first half is terrific with the plot neatly staged and the twists and turns neatly packaged. At the halfway mark you leave for the intermission with anticipation of what is going to happen in the second half.

I think upto 50 % of the second half Pawan Kumar in his terrific form has done such a flawless and meticulous narrative filled with mystery and intrigue that it back fires him when he takes a recourse to horror trope not able to find a suitable salvation to the mystery he has built all the while. Once the horror turn happens, there is a "U turn" in the narration and movie nosedives towards ordinary. You end up feeling cheated all the while and in the end you come out of theatre with mixed feelings. What could have been another masterclass from the auteur, the movie ends up just about okayish.

Movie solely belongs to Shraddha Srinath, the fulcrum around whom the whole movie revolves. She is just terrific. The gamut of emotions that the character goes through is brought out neatly by her. She is ably supported by all in the support cast. Special mention should be made on Roger Narayanan as sub-inspector Nayak.

Technically the movie is top-notch. All the three cinematographers and the music director have done their jobs with perfection to make it a visual and aural treat.

On the whole, "U turn" starts of well, builds up momentum and reaches a crescendo by the three quarters of its length following which there is a steep fall that brings down the movie from the exalted position it ought to have reached to somewhere near the ordinary.

Bottmline: Faltering climax undermines a wonderful cinema

Ulidavaru Kandanthe

My review: Ulidavaru Kandanthe

After his critically acclaimed and immensely successful "Simple Agi Ondh Love Story", Rakshit Shetty has taken his plunge into direction with "Ulidavaru Kandanthe". Movie is sure going to be a cult classic in Kannada movie industry, if not Indian cinema. Inspired by the Akira Kurosawa's classic " Rashomon" in terms of its screenplay, Rakshit has presented a movie which is rich in its thematic narrative. Movie mainly focuses on one incident that happens on a fateful day and the perspectives about that incident from six persons point of view.

Aided by one of the most taut screenplay one can write for this kind of a narrative with each episode seamlessly merging into a wholesome one, it is by far the best scripted movie this year. Movie has screenplay  from the point of view of six persons along with the one of the narrator, but not even at a fleeting moment can you find yourself confused or dazed. And the movie is thoroughly enjoyable nonetheless in spite of what may appear to be a experimental subject. That is mainly due to the dialogues which are razor sharp, written in casual chaste lingo and mouth effortlessly by the actors.

Rakshit Shetty carries on from where he left in his previous movie SAOLS. He has a ball as a cantankerous goon Richi baying for revenge. His mannerisms and body language along with his unique dialogue delivery make it a memorable role. Kishore is his usual restrained self. He brings in to use his vast experience. Achyuth Shetty has another notable role after his' in "Lucia". Sohaan as the peculiarly named Democracy does a brilliant job, an effort belying his age.

Rakshit Shetty is ably supported by Karm Chawla, the movie's cinematographer and Ajaneesh Loknath, the movie's music director.

On the whole, "Ulidavaru Kandanthe" is an exhilarating movie watching experience. Must watch for everyone whether you know Kannada or not.

Bottomline: Cult classic.

Coffee with My Wife

My review: Coffee With My Wife

"Coffee with my Wife" is a neatly written and crisply presented romantic-comedy. Written and directed by Vidyasagar, movie has Anish Tejeshwar and Sindhu Lokanath in the lead. Movie comes out as a surprise for the subtlety in which the director has handled the subject. Refraining from the usual melodrama and contrivances Vidyasagar has handled the project adeptly.

First half focuses on how the couple get to know each other and after couple of fisticuffs how they fall in love and marry. Immediately after the marriage the controversies begin to crop up culminating in a big fight leading to Sindhu going to her mother's place. Just when you thought it is a routine husband and wife quarrel and patch up story the writer springs in the surprises. From then on the movie is a laugh riot with comedy of errors.

Vidyasagar has kept the movie lively throughout. Nowhere during the narration does one feel bored. Movie keeps you engaged and brilliantly written witty dialogues make for a enjoyable watch. Anish has done exceptionally well as a doting husband with tempers on the shorter side. Sindhu brings in her experience of couple of years. She looks charming and her histrionic skills have improved by leaps and bounds. Movie has a fresh support cast and they have done their parts to perfection.

"Coffee with my Wife" is certainly the kind of cinema one would welcome in Kannada cinema industry, a pleasant departure from the routine masala fare. Go for it, you would not repent watching it.

Bottomline: Strong and tasty filter coffee.

Lucia

My review: Lucia

Pawan Kumar showed us glimpse of his immense potential with his debut "Lifeu Ishtene", which turned out to the best movie of the year 2011 in Kannada. But that movie threaded a safe path though the making was refreshing. His second venture "Lucia" was one of the most eagerly awaited movie of this year because one, everyone was curious to see whether Pawan can keep up with the good name he created with his debut flick. Two, it is the first movie made in Kannada, (if not in India) funded by audience themselves. And, three the promo posters immediately evoked curiosity when it was released due to it's bizarreness and abstractness.

So when you enter the theater the baggage of expectations does weigh on your shoulder but 130 odd minutes later you would come out with each and every inch of those fulfilled. Pawan Kumar has gone from strength to strength from his debut movie. If "Lifeu Ishtene" was brilliant, "Lucia" is outstanding. He has dared to thread the path unexplored in Indian cinema before and has done it with aplomb. The amount of homework, acumen with which he has come out with such a "lucid" screenplay that is so simple (though a lesser mind would have ensured it ends up confusing the viewers) and comprehensible once you put the pieces together in the end, that keeps you hooked to the screen for the amount of time the movie runs, is an astounding feat. Pawan, take a bow. You are one of the future of Indian cinema.

The clarity in the thinking with which Pawan has made this movie in spite of the financial hassles he had to go through would be a story worth celebrating. Made at a shoe-string budget of Rs 75 lakhs movie doesn't appear to have any tackiness even for a fraction of a second. This is an excellent example of how to make as much with the resources available at the disposal.  Now you wonder how come people in Tamil and Telugu movie industry are making movies with such glaring technical glitches with insane amount of money at their disposal. May be they need a crash course on this from Pawan.

The story has many layers (literally) which keeps one engrossed. It is based on "lucid dreaming", a scientific concept in which people can remember their dreams vividly and resume it from where they left off. A condition common in people with sleep disorders, distorted sleep architecture with excessive REM sleep. If anything more is said about the story it will spoil the viewing experience of those who have not watched it yet. But one thing is sure, there is more than one surprise in store for the viewers.
Satish Ninasam, who has played supporting role in many movies is the protagonist Nikhil. He has a challenging role to play that has many shades, layers and emotions to portray which he has managed to do with such precision. From comedy to anger to jealousy to innocence to......he has almost all the navarasas to portray. Shruthi Hariharan is another worthy addition to Kannada cinema. Not only she looks pretty, she is so natural and effortless in her acting also. Yet another actress with potential whose talents needs to be celebrated. Achyuth Kumar rocks in his supporting role. What a talent he is. Almost all the cast members have done their part excellently with natural flair.

In Poornachandra Tejaswi's music movie has variety in its album. "Jamma jamma" is a foot-tapping dance number, "High schoolu" is an experimental number on the lines of " Yaarige Healona" while "Nee  thorebeda" is a good melody.

Siddartha Nuni must be a talented cinematographer. With such restrictions in the movie's budget, he has managed to present to us the movie in such a glossy and suave manner. Pawan Kumar's visual sense was evident even in his first movie which gets celebrated on a higher scale this time in unison with Siddartha. Movie has a lot of shots with interesting angles that doesn't comes across as forced.

Only glitch is Pawan's misogynistic tendencies comes out now and then which was so evident in his debut movie as well. The manner in which he has shown the protagonist's disapproval of his lover's career ambitions and later she herself repenting not listening to him in that regard and apologizing for the same is a serious glitch in an otherwise neat movie. He could have very well done without the same. In the end she becoming a "housewife" bringing lunch (albeit Pizza )  to the work place of her husband is so regressive which one didn't expect from an intelligent person who has made such a wonderful movie.

On the whole, "Lucia" is one of the best Indian movie this year which needs all the support, a wider release and bigger reception from the pan-Indian movie loving public. After all "your small life is someone's big dream".

Bottomline: Rare gem of Indian cinema.

Auto Raja

My review: Auto Raja

After a spate of not so successful movies to his credits in the recent past Ganesh has tried to resurrect his career with generous dose of name and following that Shankar Nag enjoys among the Kannada masses with his latest movie "Auto Raja". For the starters name of the movie is inspired by the popular Shankar Nag movie of yesteryear. Movie has an animated Shankar Nag making appearance in couple of scenes though the relevancy of the same leaves a lot to be desired. And to add bit more spice protagonist takes up the role of a video jockey who inspires people mimicking Shankar Nag on live radio.

Movie starts on a promisingly. What could have been a cute little love story, movie visits many needless terrains and twists to leave the viewers exasperated by the time the movie ends. Director could have done very well to avoid all the melodrama in the end but after a point it seems that the writer became clueless of what has happened and where the story is leading to. As with most of the love stories here too misunderstanding between the lead pair leads to love from the hero but a career oriented heroine fails to take notice of it. But later numerous other misunderstandings and a shabbily written antagonistic group spoil the movie to the brink of torture by the time movie goes into it's last leg.

Ganesh has tried his level best to get into a mass role of a auto driver but somehow he fails to pass muster. There are numerous references to his old movies in addition to Shankar Nag's, most of these look forced in and contrived. He is sincere in the sentimental sequences. Bhama looks gorgeous and has done her part with conviction and utmost sincerity. However poor writing has led to her character's downfall. Heard from her interview that she did that glamorous song sequence because it was vital for the script. One wonder what significance it had with the story. It looks all the more forced into the narrative with the song jumping in from no where into the main story.  Deepika Kamaiah is okay in the limited scope on offer. Comedy sequences led by Sadhu Kokila don't tickle the funny bones.

Main attraction of the movie is its music and Arjun Janya has done a fabulous job. "Node node" is a hum worthy melody.

Movie's technical values are average. Manjunath Nayak's cinematography attracts one's attention only in the song sequences.

Uday Prakash's writing had let him down this time inspite of having the popular Shankar Nag to his aid.

On the whole, "Auto Raja" fails to live up to the initial promise it shows.

Bottomline: Boring melodrama.

Director's Special

My review: Director's Special

Guruprasad's "Director's Special" is one of those rare movies that one come across these days which has  written material in the forefront. Except for Rangayana Raghu cast is made of entirely little known actors. One should really appreciate the guts of the writer - director Guruprasad in believing in his script more than anything else. And end product is an enjoyable fare high on content.

Movie explores the psyche of unfamiliar people brought under one roof and made to live like a family and the slow unraveling of their real psyche as new situations and challenging confront them. Doesn't it ring a bell, the similarity the theme has with reality shows like Big Brother or Bid Boss. It is not all, movie also subtly hints at the movie industry and the never ending confrontations between the stars and the makers and how compromises invariably has to be made by the makers to have a "happy ending" for all concerned.

Brilliantly written script spiced up by some of the most intelligent and witty lines in recent times make it delectable fare for the cinema connoisseurs. To top it, movie boasts of actors who have performed their role with utmost sincerity and spontaneity. Rangayana Raghu leads the pack with his superlative performance. One can watch this movie just to listen to his effortless dialogue delivery only. Such a bundle of talent he is, Raghu keeps the audience in splits throughout movie. Sarcasm comes naturally to him, coupled with fabulous timing and powerfully written dialogues at his disposal, Raghu has had a field day.

Dhananjay as the protagonist (if one has to refer him as such) is good for a debutant. Though most of his expression get hidden by the mush and the beard, he passes the test in his first movie. Sumithra Devi, Ram and Vatsala Mohan who completes cast of the movie have also done their parts well.

To make a movie which revolves only around five characters mostly in one location (house of the protagonist) requires guts and Guruprasad seems to be having lots of it. And to make his mission successful he needs the performers to translate the written material into performance and deliver it to the audience without any dilution of the director's vision. The five member cast have done it fabulously. Pooja Gandhi is okay in the song sequence she appears in.

On the flip side movie is technically very average. One can't help but get a feeling of watching a stage drama. Mahendra Simha is the cinematographer. To make matters worse the background score leaves a lot to be desired. It hinders the narration by drowning the dialogues at many places. With poorly mixed surround sound, background score irritates and after a point gets unbearable. It is amateurish work by Anoop Seelin and the sound engineers.

On the whole, "Director's Special" is a special movie for those who enjoy neatly written narrative and witty intelligent dialogues.

Bottomline: Pure cinema.

Kaddipudi

My review: Kaddipudi

Duniya Soori has always made movies that are realistic albeit with commercial considerations fitting within its ambit. With his latest movie "Kaddipudi" he explores the life of a gangster who tries to turn a new leaf and his past comes back to haunt him. Though there have been many movies which have explored similar themes in the past the treatment that Soori has given to the plot is refreshing which makes the movie special. Stylishly made at the same time not compromising on the human element Soori has stuck to his main strength which is to explore the raw human emotions.

Engaging right from the start to the finish, movie moves at a fair clip. Strong screenplay that keeps the audience hooked to the storyline, intelligently written yet enjoyable dialogues, stylish making and superlative performance from the cast, all makes it a good cinema.

Though the story seems not that novel, characters, scenes and the dialogues are not that formulaic either. Except for the character of Daisy ( played by Aindrita Ray)  which looked forced in and out of place (though Soori tries to mend it by making the character's appearance in a later scene setting in motion a series of events that lead to significant events which becomes a turning point in the protagonist's life) all other characters seamlessly confluence into the narrative.

Shivraj Kumar has underplayed a great deal which has done wonders to the character he has played. He is too good in the titular role of Kaddipudi. Radhika Pandit lives up to her reputation of one of the most promising young actress in south India. Coming out with sterling performance as Uma who falls for the protagonist and whose character sketch goes through a full curve it is hard to imagine anyone else who could have done justice to that role. Aindrita Ray sizzles in the song sequence and one scene in which she appears. It is a child's play for Ananth Nag in a dignified role. Avinash and other co-stars have given adequate support.

V.Harikrishna's background score amply supports the narrative while songs also aid in the narrative flow. Technically it is one of the better movies that has come out of Kannada movie industry in the recent times. Krishna is the cinematographer.  His lighting especially in the Aindrita Ray's song sequence is fabulous.

On the whole, "Kaddipudi" is one of the best work from Soori, Shivraj Kumar, Radhika Pandit and cinematographer Krishna. Must watch for all Kannada movie connoisseurs.

Bottomline: Good cinema.

Mynaa

My review: Mynaa

After his previous hit and critically acclaimed "Sanju weds Geetha", Nagasekhar is back with yet another tragic love story "Mynaa", only this time he misses the mark by far. Movie is plagued by poor writing, over-the-top acting, and mendacious execution. As a result what could have been a tragic love story which could have created everlasting impact in the mind of the viewers, ends up leaving a bad taste.

Example for the poor writing is the climax which instead of creating tragic feel in the viewers only brings out unintended laughter due to the contrived happenings. Also the love story between the lead pair is not that well etched out. Blame it on poor writing or execution or over-the-top acting by Nithya Menon, Mynaa character doesn't get the sympathy it ought to have got. Nithya Menon's inappropriate laughter which borders in between sane and insane is irritating to the core.

Dialogues of the movie is pretty ordinary though one must appreciate actors from other languages trying to dub themselves with utmost sincerity.

Chetan needs crash course in acting. Except for his portfolio smile, he is not able to give adequate expressions in the other sequences. Nithya Menon irritates with her exaggerated cutesy portrayal. Sharathkumar is adequate while Suman Ranganath doesn't have much to do until she gets her due near the climax which is the only thing she seems to be capable of nowadays. Sadhu Kokila does manages to tickle the funny bones. Almost everyone in the cast ham resulting in aural torture with the one who comes as the forest guard leading the way.

Pillars of strength for this movie are songs and cinematography. Following the success of "Sanju weds Geetha" Jessie Gift has once again recreated the magic. "Modalla malayente", "Mynaa Mynaa" and "Baa illi beesu" are wonderful melodies from him. However Sadhu Kokila's bakcground score leaves a lot to be desired.

Satya Hegde's camera has had a field day in capturing the nature's bounty of the Konkan coast in general and Dudhsagar falls in particular. Spectacular aerial shots of the falls and the surrounding forests are a visual treat.

On the whole, Nagasekhar has missed out this time with a overtly dramatic, contrived and poorly written and executed "Mynaa".

Bottomline: Over the top melodrama

Bachchan

My review: Bachchan

Sudeep's Ugadhi special "Bachchan" starts of with a bang only to meander through to the intermission but more than makes up for it with a riveting and engrossing second half. In the end one when one comes out of the theater there is a sense of satisfaction.

Written and directed by Shashank, "Bachchan " touches upon may topical issues albiet within the constraints of  a commercial cinema. Shashank seems to have done lots of homework in the medical subject that he has dealt with in this movie. Especially the scene where a psychiatrist explains about Paranoid Schizophrenia is one of the best I have seen in a movie, wonderfully written in such a simple manner. Kudos Shashank !

Shashank could have done a better job in the first half. It is sluggish with nothing much happening. Few comedy scenes does make the viewers laugh out loud, but by and large it is stale. The second half is altogether a different story. It starts with a bang with numerous twists and turns, hard-hitting flashback and a nice culmination. (Watch out for the references of "NIMHANS" in the second half.)

Action sequences are well choreographed and picturized, though tacky computer graphics watering down the impact a bit. Shekar Chandra is the cinematographer and he has done a decent job. Especially the "Saada ninna" song is picturized excellently.

Sudeep rocks one more time with his excellent acting which come to fore in the second half. He is excellent in action sequences as well as the emotional ones. It is a treat for his fans. Paarul Yadav is getting better with every one of her movies. She emotes well but needs to work on her Kannada lip-sinc. Bhavana has a dignified cameo which forms the nucleus of the story. Tulip Joshi comes in an insignificant cameo. The villian gang of Pradeep Rawat, Ravishankar, Ashish Vidyarthi and Naseer does the routine ham act.

V.Harikrishna is the composer of the movie. "Saada ninna" in Sonu Nigam and Shreya Ghosal's voices is an awesome melody number. Background score enhances the mass appeal.

On the whole, "Bachchan" may seem like a routine commercial action masala, but it is one of the better ones  backed by a solid story, rocking second half and power-packed performance from Sudeep.

Bottomline: Entertaining actioner.

Simpleaag Ond Love Story

My review: Simpleaag Ond Love Story

Written and directed by debutant Suni, "Simpleaag Ond Love Story" (SOLS) is as fresh as pre-monsoon rain or i should say brings back dejavu of 2006 when a movie with largely unknown cast and crew came as a whiff of fresh air and broke all the existing records in Kannada, "Mungaru Male". SOLS also has relatively unknown cast and crew with the freshness and brilliance in the storyline, screenplay, dialogues, making and acting better than "Mungaru Male" if one takes it as the benchmark of romantic comedies in Kannada.

Debutant Suni has worked wonders with an interesting concept of three love stories packaged into the main plot which is "not that simple" a love story with an exciting twist in the end. He seems to have a strong grasp of the current generation, their lifestyle and their way of romancing. It shows on screen in the making and the dialogues  Though there is ample scope for melodrama and theatrics he has stayed clear of the same handling the numerous such situations with maturity at the same time not getting overboard.

Most striking aspect of the movie is the sparkling dialogues. Down to earth, mostly in the lingo of the youth with ample doses of references to things that interest them like cricket, movies, social networking, etc, keeps the movie at a lighter plane throughout. Even in those situations which tend to get serious and mushy dialogues spruce up the proceedings in a lively manner which brings cheers. Dialogues in this movie is sure to be emulated in many movies of similar themes to follow. Suni thus has become a trendsetter in that respect.

Suni has presented two love stories within the main plot which is also a love story. As a result we end up watching three loves stories, each different in tone, pace and making set against the backdrop of summer, winter and rainy seasons respectively, all the three entertaining all the same. The love story narrated by the male protagonist is the most entertaining of the three though the main plot is the most interesting, riveting and emotionally stirring. The intelligence of the writer Suni comes to the forefront  when he seamlessly blend these stories into one with each of these contributing to the main plot. Nothing is contrived or forced into the narrative which makes the task of the writer Suni laudable.

Though towards the end there is some flashes of inspiration from the "Fifty First Dates" with the references to anterograde amnesia most of the content is original and fresh. It is an astounding effort from a debutant who seems to have good knowledge of writing, both screenplay and dialogues. It would sure propel his career way forward than what he could have envisaged at the outset.

It is the lead pair Rakshit Shetty and Shwetha Srivatsav who carry the whole movie on their shoulders. They are there in almost all the frames and will be long remembered for their performances. Rakshit is natural, he adopts to various moods like a chameleon effortlessly. Whether it is a happy-go-lucky careless youth, a mature and purposeful sculptor or the main protagonist who is smitten by the mysterious girl whom he encounters, Rakshit is first rate.

It has been a long time since one has seen such an expressive actress as a leading lady in south Indian cinema. Shwetha Srivatsav is brilliant in her portrayal of the female protagonist. Seamless variations in her expressions and myriad of emotions that she brings on the screen in more than praiseworthy. Her pronunciation of the Kannada  dialogues are a delight. Kannada cinema will get enriched with such a talented actress who is also pleasant on the eyes.

Though not much scope for the supporting cast, the minors characters are all well written and well performed.

B.J.Bharath's background score adds definite value to the proceedings. It elevates the mood of many scenes and enhances the impact. "Baanali badalago" and "Karagida baaninalli" are two good melodies that are instant earworms.

Manohar Joshi is the cinematographer. Many frames are awesomely conceived and shot with the nature's splendor in the beaches of Udipi like Kapu and Malpe and the rainy terrains of Coorg aiding him handsomely. It is a visual poetry onscreen like what Krishna was able to write on celluloid with "Mungaru Male".

SOLS is one of those movies which gets almost most of the parts right with very few glitches. Forgive me for time and again comparing it with the trendsetting landmark movie in Kannada "Mungaru Male", but SOLS will fast join its league. It is a must watch. Rush to the theaters near you to greet and enjoy the best movie of the year in Kannada.

Take a bow Suni, Manohar Joshi, Bharath, Rakshit and Shwetha, your hardwork and effort would sure get recognized in a big way this year.

Bottomline: Blockbuster written all over it.

Attahasa

My review: Attahasa

A.M.R.Ramesh known for his movies based on real life incidents, this time has tried his hands on the biopic of famous forest brigand Veerappan. Extensive research that has gone about in the making of this movie is astounding and the result shows on screen. It is as authentic it can get as a biopic on the brigand.

Ramesh has chosen not to take sides which has bode well for the movie. It is a third man's perspective of what really happened rather than why it happened, by which he has also steered away from controversy (though he eventually had to compromise with the brigand's wife regarding the portions which portray's her character). Narrative style, though docudramaish, the screenplay is so engaging that it never tires the viewers.
Second half gather more steam and is replete with action till the end.

Ramesh has tried to incorporate most of the significant events in the rise and fall of Veerappan. One glaring exception being that movie has totally ignored the work done by Walter Devaram who was one of the heads of the joint STF during the 90's (Ramesh has tried to redeem himself by having a snapshot of him in the end credits).

It is hard to present a story like this without much dramatization and idolization, but Ramesh has done just that which deserves applause. Luckily the Kannada version has not been butchered as mercilessly as the Tamil version, hence the screenplay and the narrative is lucid. Only drawback is that it is humorous to see all the Tamil characters mouthing flawless Kannada dialogues. Voice-over would have made it more authentic.

Arjun as the dashing (now legendary) chief special task force officer Vijaykumar is brilliant. His body language, demeanor and style is apt for the role. Kishore is excellent as Veerappan. He doesn't have much scope to emote by scores more than sufficiently by his body language and camouflaging himself into the character. Most of Vijaylakshmi's scenes are blurred and hence it is difficult to comment on her contribution to the movie. Suresh Oberai as actor Rajkumar is apt while Ravi Kale, Laxmi Rai, Shika, Sampath Raj and A.M.R.Ramesh have done their parts adequately.

Vijay Milton's cinematography is brilliant. He has captured the beautiful, dangerous terrains of Karnataka-Tamil Nadu border well. His hard work is evident in every frame each of which is flawlessly shot.

Sandeep Chowta's background score is okay. Many places there is too much sound where a more mellow score would have doubled the impact.

On the whole, "Attahasa" is one of the better biopics one has come across in Indian film industry.

Bottomline: Hard work needs appreciation.

Edegarike

My review: Edegarike
"Edegarike" is an interesting movie written by Agni Shridhar and directed by Sumana Kittur. It has a very novel storyline and engrossing screenplay. It is the execution that lags behind but the script is so taut and good the final product is a once watchable flick.

"Edegarike" is an interesting tale of a friendship between two gangsters one killer and the other to-be-killed. The moral dilemma and the clash of personalities, one a ruthless killer without any morals and the other a righteous man who gets into the profession by quirk of fate. It makes up for a riveting watch with the movie under just two hours.

The movie moves at a steady pace  and keep one engaged throughout. There are no undue melodrama or over the top action sequences. Interestingly though it deals with the underworld and gang-wars there is only one action sequence. The movie explores more on the psyche of these people, their thought process, differing personalities, etc. So nice to see a movie that speaks about the humane aspect of the criminals without justifying their acts or glorifying the same.

Atul Kulkarni is brilliant as the morally correct Sridhar who is supposed to kill the protagonist but instead ends up becoming a good friend of him. The manner in which he has portrayed the mental agony and dilemma that he is faced with,  reaffirms the fact what a great actor he is. Aditya is no match for Atul but tries to keep his end engaged. Most of the movie he has the same blank expressions. Akanksha is pretty and does a decent job as a social activist who falls in love with the gangster. Movie has a strong support cast and they have all delivered their parts with aplomb.

Deepak Pundit is the music director and movie has just one song which is a shooting melody. His background score is adequate. Movie is shot by Rakesh, in spite of the constraints of the budget has done a pretty decent job.

Sumana needs to brush up her directorial skills. Such an enthralling script ought to have made more convincingly. Nonetheless the end product is way better than the other Kannada movies that got released in the recent times.

On the whole, "Edegarike" has gripping story and fine acting that warrants one time watch.

Bottomline: Gutsy

Drama

My review: Drama

Maverick writer-director of Kannada film industry Yograj Bhatt's latest release "Drama" is a romantic-comedy which looses the plot after a promising start. Unlike his previous flicks this movie has a solid story but the screenplay goes haywire.

Movie seem to be shot in a hurry and edited in a jiffy for many scenes end abruptly and some others spring on from nowhere. Final product ends up like a collection of gags and comedy one-liners with few sentimental scenes which border on melodrama thrown in between. Easily "Drama" would end up as the least aesthetic of Yograj's movies so far. What happened to the subtlety of emotions and screenplay that he is a master of.

Other two aspects which are USPs of a Yograj movie, enchanting & stunning visuals and awesome music, both are missing in "Drama". Krishna who was the man behind those stunning visuals in "Mungaru Mazhe" disappoints big time this time. Technically the movie is tacky. And it is a routine musical score from V.Harikrishna. Except "Drama hitavachana" all other songs are not that impressive.

Yash has done a fine job as the protagonist, fun loving irresponsible guy who goes to college with intention of pursuing a girl who happens to meet him on her way to college! A hackneyed characterization. Satish Neenasam carries the movie on his shoulders with his brilliant comical one-liners which keeps the audience in splits. He acquaints himself well in the emotional scenes also. Radhika Pandit is good as ever as the haughty Nandhini with whom the protagonist is romantically involved. Her poor make-up sense continues. Sampath Raj is wasted in a cliched role while Sindhu Lokanath has nothing much to do. Ambarish appears in a bizarre cameo.

Unimaginative & logicless sequences, tiring screenplay, bad editing and poor technical values sums up Yogaraj Bhat's "Drama."

Bottomline: Amateur drama.

Addhuri

My review : Addhuri

“Addhuri” is a romantic comedy which marks the debut for Dhruva Sarja . He has done pretty well for someone who has to carry the whole movie on his shoulders. Writer-Director A.P.Arjun has taken a routine story of misunderstanding between lovers spiced it up with a sub-plot of the hero trying to get back his love within a period of one week before she leaves for her hometown. Whole story is told in a light-hearted manner. Thankfully the melodrama in the end is a very brief.

Screenplay moves at a brisk pace without much space for boredom. The exchanges between the lead two replete with humour & casual day to day lingo makes up for an enjoyable viewing. Though Dhruva & Radhika Pandit who play the protagonists occupy most of the screen space one doesn’t get tired of seeing them onscreen. They have a good chemistry between them. The love-hate relationship between them is captured & enacted well by the director & the lead pair respectively.

Dhruva Sarja is a nice find. He has done exceedingly well for the first timer. He enacts well in almost all the sequences be it humour, romance, sentiments, dance or action. As said earlier he lights up the screen & makes a sparkling pair with Radhika. Touted to be one of the most talented actress in Kannada film industry in the recent times, Radhika lived up to the expectations. She does her part casually & effortlessly bringing about myriads of emotions & expressions without much strain. Considering that the movie almost focus entirely on the lead pair it is vital that their performances must be good enough to do justice to the script. And boy they have done precisely that.

Dialogues by Arjun form a pillar of strength for the movie. The casual language with adequate dose of contemporary usages of the youth form the bulk of the dialogues used. Good that he refrained from mushy romantic lines which may have looked artificial.

V.Harikrishna is the music director & surprisingly songs are not that good this time around. Background score is also average & mundane.

Soorya S Kiran is the cinematographer & he has captured the various emotions of the lead pair well. He shows his talents in the song & action sequences. Technically movie is just about average.

On the whole, “Addhuri” is light-hearted fun packaged with adequate doses of romance & humour.

Bottomline: Breezy romcom

Godfather

My review : Godfather

“Godfather” is a remake of K.S.Ravikumar’s “Varalaru” starring Ajithkumar in a triple role. Upendra has tried to do what Ajithkumar did in the original but falls way short in the final analysis.

Actually it is a very ordinary story of revenge & remorse made special by Ajithkumar’s portrayal of father with feminine body language & the vengeful son. Upendra spoils both these characters by his over the top acting. He tries too hard & all the time self-conscious in the role of Shiv with feminine traits. And his Abhinayas especially in the fight sequences are ridiculous. No wonder every time he does that theatre is bursts with laughter & taunts.

In the role of vengeful son he overacts a lot. He himself is confused with the characterization. Instead of portraying with cunningness & anger, he does an act bordering on psychosis. But the sincerity of the man is seen in each & every frame of the movie. It is only that these roles have already been done brilliantly by Ajithkumar in Tamil & Upendra fails to match up with it.

Soundarya does a decent job in her first movie. Catherine Tresa looks out of sorts. It is funny to watch her perform mentally challenged old lady act. Rest in the cast put in their sincere efforts.

A.R.Rahman’s songs from the original have been retained. Background score is pretty ordinary. Technically the movie is shoddy with low production values.

Sriram is both the cinematographer as well as the director of the movie. Direction is not that spot on. At many places movie looks amateurish & drama like. Histrionics run haywire while many sequences & dialogues are right from the 80’s cinema.

On the whole, “Godfather” fails to live up to the expectations.

Bottomline : Fails to deliver.

Romeo

My review : Romeo

“Romoe” starring Ganesh , written &  directed by P.C.Sekhar is a throwback to the misogynistic movies of the 80’s & 90’s. With its ridiculous plot line which actually portrays a “misogynistic” bigot as its protagonist movie does a lot of disservice to the society as a whole.

Take a look at the ridiculous plot of this movie. The protagonist is a slum dwelling graduate who falls in love with his office manager. He manages to woo her by telling loads of lies that he is a well to do rich guy & when she gets to know it he physically abuses her. She rightly moves out of his home & gets divorce. After a few months, when they again meet he tries to ignore her which rekindles in her love for him.....sigh..!!!!

When movie portraying intelligent & strong female characters have started coming & successfully at that , this movie portrays a heroine who is dumb to say the least. Which sane woman in this current age would be taken for such a royal ride as it is portrayed in this movie?  By trying to hide behind in the name of comedy would not be forgiven in the longer run. It is time to move on & writers to begin thinking wisely & neutrally.

Inspite of the ridiculousness of the plot , the actors have put in their sincere efforts. Ganesh is good back to his comical timing . He has a ball with other veterans Rangayana Raghu & Sadhu Koklia. Raghu is brilliant as ever with his immaculate dialogue delivery & timing sense. Sadhu Kokila brings down the roof with his comic act. Bhavana is gorgeous & has performed well too in a banal role. Avinash is in a caricaturised role.

In Arjun Janya’s music “Alochane ” is a brilliant melody while “Everybody rock ” & ”By 2 bedsheetalli” are nice foot-tapping numbers.

Vaidhi is the cinematographer & technically the movie is good.

P.C.Sekhar has tried to make a romantic-comedy-cum-family-drama & has succeeded in his attempt too. Only that he could have tried to stick on to a decent contemporary plot.

On the whole, “Romeo” is for those who enjoy chauvinistic plot & mindless laughter.

Bottomline: Few laughs at the cost of your conscience

Dandupalya

My review : Dandupalya

Based on real life incidents that rocked the city of Bangalore in the late 90,s & early 2000's , "Dandupalya" is a riveting movie. The raw & ruthless manner in which the movie is been shot might be too much for weak hearted people. One does need courage & gumption to withstand the goriness & the brutality of the happenings on the screen. More so when one think of it that these things actually happened & people based on whom this movie is made are still alive.

"Dandupalya" is directed by Srinivas Raju , starring Pooja Gandhi, Raghu Mukherjee , Makarand Deshpande , Ravi Kale , Priyanka Kothari, Bhavya & Sudharani. Movie moves at a brisk pace with no slack moments in between except for the small detour it takes following the romance of one of the victims. Though there seems to be umpteen censor cuts still the movie manages to have continuity .

At the end of the movie the director succeeds in sending down shivers in the spine of the viewers. Also the movie takes a neutral viewpoint without taking sides yet it comes out powerful , therein lies the success of the director.

Technically the movie is mixed. Most of the movie following the gang & its activities have been well shot. The amateurishness comes in the court sequences as well the Priyanka Kothari side plot. Cinematographer Ram Prasad has shot the movie nicely with good quality. Arjun Janya's background scores amply supports the gory happenings on screen. However his songs letdown but these kind of movies songs doesn't play that important a role.

Coming on to the performance of the actors almost all of them have done brilliant job. Makarand Deshpande walks away with the honours not by that bigger margin from the rest. His menacing eyes & perfect lipsinc makes it a pleasure watching him emote on screen. Raghu Mukherjee is also brilliant while Pooja Gandhi is a revelation in her role of Laksmi. Ravi Kale is dependable as ever while Bhavya & Sudharani use their experience to a great deal. All the others who form the Dandupalya gang have all done a very good job. Only usual suspect Priyanka Kothari once again fails to act on screen even after all these years trying to do the same.

On the whole, "Dandupalya" is a hard-hitting movie which makes a huge impact on the viewer.

Bottomline : Not for the weak hearted

Lifeu Ishtene

My review : Lifeu Ishtene

“Lifeu Isthene” is a swanky, urbane , stylish , pragmatic & uber cool version of “Autograph” by debutant director Pawan Kumar. Happy to finally catch up with the most liked Kannada movie of the year 2011.

This movie is a proof of how a taut script , flawless execution , wonderful casting & excellent acting can elevate a wafer thin story into a brilliant movie. No point in 2 hours 15 minutes viewer feels bored. No wonder movie worked wonders among the urban youth of Karnataka this year.

Story is how a “Ted Mosby”ish Vishal finally happens to meet & get hitched with the love of his life after a series of romantic misadventures. The narration is linear with lighter vein maintained throughout the length of the movie with a brief melodrama towards the end which perfectly blends in with the overall narration.

Diganth has become an ideal choice for roles of this kind after “Manasaree” & “Pancharangi”. He has done an excellent job as the protagonist Vishal with a restrained performance. Samyuktha Horanadu as the fun loving journalism student is first class. Sindhu Lokanath as the practical Nadhini , Vishal’s classmate who breakup with him when he fails to consider a serious career option is adequate. Neenasam Satish as Vishal’s pragmatic friend Shivu has also done his role to perfection , especially in the pre-climax scene where he swells up your eyes with tears.

“Yarige helona” is a huge hit among the youth while most of the other songs are melodious & hum worthy. Music is by Mano Murthy.

Sugnana’s cinematography is suave & trendy keeping with the overall mood of the movie.

Pawan Kumar has made a sterling debut with this movie & he seems to understand the pulse of today’s youngsters. He also has a very good visual sense & aesthetic taste.

On the whole , “Lifeu Ishtene” is a funny nostalgic ride down the memory lane for some & empathetic commentary on their own life for some.

Bottomline: Brilliant

Only Vishnuvardhana

My review : Only Vishnuvardhana

After a very long time here is a pucca commercial movie packed with a very well written script that engrosses the viewers right through the 2 hours & 30 minutes. “Only Vishnuvardhana” by debutant director P.Kumar is a very entertaining movie & worth the every penny spent in making it & viewing it.

The script is the hero of the movie with very few flaws. The screenplay is seamless & racy and at the same time engaging that in no point in time do you feel bored or disengaged. Entertainment is the mantra & the director-writer P.Kumar has done his best to provide it without any pretence & he has done an excellent job in doing so.

Story revolves around the dreamy-eyed Vishnuvardhana played enthusiastically by Sudeep who happens to lay hands on the mobile of a powerful don (Sonu Sood) & the cat and mouse game that ensues.

Director has maintained the lighter vein through the movie which keeps the viewer enthused all along. The intelligence of the writer in P.Kumar is evident in the cat and mouse game between the hero & the villain. Except for the climax all through the movie intelligent handling of the script by P.Kumar is apparent.

Sudeep as the protagonist is apt for the role & he has done his part well. His dialogue delivary & modulation are fun. Bhavana has nothing much to do but she is an eye candy. Priyamani has extended guest appearance with a purpose. Sonu Sood once again reprises pea headed villain this time too. Achyuth Kumar as the astrologist friend of the hero is first class in his comical role.

Cinematographer Rajarathnam has captured the movie with keeping in mind what is needed for a commercial movie.

V.Harikrishna’s music is already a huge hit. “Yedeyolage guitaru” is rage with youth & his background score is adequate.

On the whole, “Only Vishnuvardhana ” is a power packed commercial entertainer , worth the money. (There will be huge demand for the remake rights of this movie in other languages in the coming days)

Bottomline : Sakkath picture maga
