Sundarapandian

My review: Sundarapandian

"Sundarapandian" starring M.Sasikumar in the lead has his stamp all over it. It is not that surprising that the movie is written & directed Prabhakaran who is Sasikumar's protege. It is an interesting & riveting tale of romance & friendship. Though Sasikumar's previous flick "Nadodigal" dealt with similar relationship , here the theme is totally different.

First half breezes through, before one notice it is already one hour & fifteen minutes. It is romcom "Madhurai" style. The intermission block ends with a jolt , creating an air of anticipation for what to follow. Second half though gets serious , director has steered clear of any melodrama keeping an underlay of humor throughout the narration.

Prabhakaran seems to have threaded the path of his mentor in dealing with the screenplay. Even dialogues have Sasikumar's audacity & cheekiness. Couple of well written lines on friendship goes well with the audience. Though movie starts of with an usual "hero-intro" song followed by hero trying to help his friend's love , the tale takes various unusual & interesting detours which keeps the viewer interested till the end.

Sasikumar is clever in choosing the script for the movie in which he is acting & does it one more time. Though he is getting typecast over &over again as a rustic youth of south Tamil nadu , here he has more chance to do comedy  rather than looking serious all through. Lakshmi Menon is another good addition to the Tamil movie industry from the "God's own country". Emotions come effortlessly to her & she is pleasant looking too. Vijay Sethupathy , Inigo Prabhakaran & another new face who star as the three friends of Sasikumar have done their parts well. Thennavan gets a good part to play after a long while. Suri evokes  lots of laughs with his own  indomitable style. Appukutty is good in a very pivotal role that changes the course of the story.

In Raghunanthan's music "Kadhal Vandhu" & "Nenjukulle" are delightful numbers. His background score is supportive to the narrative. Premkumar is the cinematographer & he has done his part adequately.

Though at many places one does get reminded of few of Sasikumar's previous movies , Prabhakaran has tried to present the movie with as much fresh scenes as possible. If the viewers heave a sigh of relief when the hero raises up after being ambushed lifeless & start rooting for him , therein lies the success of the director. Prabhakaran has achieved it in "Sundarapandian" & it is sure going to reflect in the Box-office.

On the whole, Sasikumar's purple patch as an actor continues with this entertaining "Sundarapandian".

Bottomline : Friendship Vs Love

3.5/5
